The Splinter

Part of the Cabin Fever 2025 event powered by VELUX, The Splinter was conceived and built on the grounds of a former textile factory and wartime labor camp. The project interprets the theme “Quality Time – Connection to Each Other” through a small, expressive structure made with under one kilometer of timber. Prefabricated and assembled during the workshop, it demonstrates how minimal resources can create profound spatial experiences.

Description:

The Splinter’s angular geometry emerges from the tension between protection and openness. Clad in red-stained timber slats, its faceted form contrasts with the surrounding forest while framing precise moments of light and view. Irregularly placed square windows and a sharply cut roofline introduce a playful, sculptural quality that changes with the sun’s movement.

Built using lightweight timber profiles (40x40 mm), the pavilion was prefabricated and assembled within the festival duration. Designed for disassembly and transport, it embodies sustainable, circular design principles. The cabin offers a warm interior retreat for reflection, conversation, and connection—reminding us that architecture, at any scale, can bring people together through craft, light, and presence.
