ENTROPIC and studio4SPACE's Re-Creational Pavilions received third prize in Kołobrzeg's 2021 architectural and urban-design competition for gastronomy and retail pavilions along the Baltic promenade. The proposal treats small-scale commercial architecture as a connected public landscape, giving everyday cafés and shops a shared identity without imposing a single repeated object.
A family of timber modules can accommodate different sizes and arrangements. A contemporary interpretation of the gabled roof introduces asymmetry and variation, allowing individual pavilions to retain their character within a coherent architectural language. Adaptability becomes a means of organising the waterfront rather than a reason to leave its visual identity fragmented.
The material proposal brings this approach into contact with the coast's environmental context. Reprocessed plastic waste is proposed for the façades, turning a discarded resource into part of the pavilions' expression. The jury's published reasoning singled out that material idea and its relationship to Kołobrzeg's identity.
For ENTROPIC, the recognition demonstrates the architectural potential of an ordinary urban brief. Places to buy a coffee, pause or browse can also contribute to the quality of the public realm. Developed with studio4SPACE, Re-Creational Pavilions explores how modular design, material reuse and the particular character of a coastal town can form a generous setting for daily life.
