The Container Tower01

The project

Located in Terneuzen, Netherlands, the Container Tower reimagines the shipping container as architecture. The 20-meter-high watch tower celebrates the city’s heritage as a historic port and gateway to Europe’s inland waterways. Visible from both land and sea, it links industry, community, and culture into one civic gesture.

The tower is conceived as both monument and outlook. Its stacked form references global trade while elevating daily industrial objects into an iconic civic structure. From its top, visitors experience sweeping views of the Scheldt and the dynamic landscape of the harbor.

Beyond its function as a viewing point, the Container Tower embodies Terneuzen’s spirit of resilience and transformation. It connects past and present—acknowledging the labor, industries, and networks that shaped the city—while asserting its identity as a modern port with a cultural heartbeat.
