Abu Dhabi Coves The masterplan reimagines the coastline as an active spatial system rather than a fixed edge. A sequence of sculpted coves extends the waterfront, creates calmer water conditions, and distributes access to the sea across the development. Villas, apartments, and island residences are positioned within a layered network of beaches, promenades, marinas, and sheltered bays, ensuring that water, views, and outdoor living become shared defining qualities. The project unfolds as a gradual transition from public energy to private retreat. Lively hospitality and retail areas at the mainland arrival give way to quieter residential enclaves toward the island, while service circulation is carefully separated from the guest experience. Shaped by prevailing breezes, shaded landscapes, and protected shorelines, the masterplan combines resort-level comfort with environmental performance, creating a coastal destination where every horizon feels deliberate and personal. Madinah Grand Mosque A contemporary mosque for Madinah, where the memory of the Hijrah unfolds into prayer, learning and shared civic life. Madinah Grand Mosque is a proposal by ENTROPIC with Aldowayan Architects for Knowledge Economic City in Madinah, Saudi Arabia. Its story begins with the Hijrah and the mosque's relationship to community, translating that legacy into a journey through shaded thresholds, courtyards, prayer halls and cultural spaces. Rather than an isolated monument, the mosque is conceived as an inhabited piece of the city. A fabric of volumes gathers around a shared courtyard, while a continuous portico connects the public landscape to the quieter spaces of preparation and worship. The rose becomes an architectural idea: layered petals are translated into a rhythmic facade, filtered light and a sequence of sheltered edges. The proposal extends beyond prayer through a museum, a learning hub and elevated terraces. These spaces connect cultural memory to contemporary community life. From the city to the courtyard, from ablution to the prayer hall, the architecture is organised as a gradual passage between movement, gathering and reflection. Madinah Grand Mosque reinterprets the mosque as both a civic and spiritual place. Worship, learning, memory and hospitality unfold through shaded passages, courtyards and gardens, creating a gradual transition from the life of the city to the quiet concentration of prayer. A Journey Through the Sacred. An Oasis Becomes a City of Belonging. Before becoming Madinah, the city was known as Yathrib, an oasis shaped by agriculture, palm groves and exchange. The Hijrah of 622 CE transformed its communal and spiritual identity, with the Prophet’s Mosque at its centre. An Oasis Becomes a City of Belonging. Hospitality as Civic Space Madinah’s identity is shaped by hospitality, exchange and shared cultural life. The mosque translates these traditions into flexible courtyards, shaded approaches and spaces for prayer, gathering and learning, making hospitality a core architectural principle. Hospitality as Civic Space Sacred Scale, Human Rhythm. Al-Masjid an-Nabawi is understood as an interconnected sacred landscape, where prayer halls, courtyards, shaded edges and multiple approaches form one continuous system. For the Grand Mosque, this inspires a porous perimeter, active courtyard and shaded passages that connect civic movement with spiritual concentration. Sacred Scale, Human Rhythm. The Journey The concept emerges from two complementary movements: the Hijrah from Makkah to Madinah, and the orientation of prayer from Madinah back toward Makkah. One defines arrival, the other direction. Together, they transform historical memory into a spatial sequence of movement, pause and orientation. Concept schematic connecting the Hijrah from Makkah to Madinah with prayer orientation towards Makkah The Hijrah and the qibla / concept schematic Threshold. Passage. Preparation. Prayer. Hillside Residences A stepped residential landscape, where terraces, planted edges and framed views bring Tirana’s growing density closer to the scale and rhythm of its hills. Hillside Residences is conceived as a stepped urban landscape, shaped by the relationship between Tirana’s growing density and its surrounding hills. The tower rises through a sequence of terraces that reduce its visual mass, open the apartments toward light, views, and sunset, and transform the façade into a layered composition of balconies, planted edges, and deep shadow lines. Rather than standing as a conventional vertical block, the building becomes an extension of the terrain—balancing urban presence with domestic scale. Warm materials, efficient residential layouts, and an active ground floor create a development that is both recognizable and composed, contributing to Tirana’s evolving skyline while establishing a calm and adaptable model for contemporary living. The Bedouin Retreat Waseelah, The Bedouin Retreat, is a private estate in Al-Ammariyah near Riyadh, translating Bedouin shelter, hospitality and weaving into architecture and landscape. Waseelah explores how inherited knowledge of land, shelter and gathering can inform a contemporary retreat in Al-Ammariyah, Saudi Arabia. Aldowayan Architects leads the architecture and masterplan, ENTROPIC develops the landscape strategy, and Autentico shapes the lighting approach. Waseelah is a private farm estate in Al-Ammariyah, northwest of Riyadh, within a rugged wadi landscape near Wadi Hanifa. The proposal balances hospitality, residential comfort and landscape regeneration through a contemporary interpretation of Salmani and Bedouin spatial principles. Seasonal settlement, the mobile domestic plan and woven shelter form the report’s cultural foundation. Repeated triangular fields translate this research into roofs, courts, paths and terraces. Aldowayan Architects leads the architecture and masterplan; ENTROPIC develops the landscape strategy; Autentico defines the lighting approach. The landscape begins with preservation of rock, drainage and existing vegetation. Terracing, native planting, shade and seasonal water management are design intentions requiring site-specific verification. Waseelah is a private farm estate in Al-Ammariyah, northwest of Riyadh. Set within a rugged wadi landscape near Wadi Hanifa, the approximately 34,835 sqm site is defined by steep topography, long views, exposed rock and seasonal drainage. The proposal balances hospitality, residential comfort and landscape regeneration through a contemporary interpretation of Salmani and Bedouin spatial principles. Aldowayan Architects leads the architecture and masterplan; ENTROPIC develops the landscape strategy; Autentico defines the lighting approach. A Retreat Shaped by Place. / architectural view 02 / SITE CONTEXT The Landscape Is the Starting Point. The site photographs reveal stratified rock formations and eroded slopes, with loose stones, gravel and compacted earth along natural drainage paths. Vegetation occurs in isolated pockets where depressions can retain water. The landscape is distinctly arid, with no visible water at the time of observation. Its wadi formation nevertheless records seasonal flows. Elevated edges and natural ridgelines offer expansive views, giving the site its geological identity and spatial depth. The project begins with terrain shaped by time, erosion and stone. Rather than flattening it, the design reads the slope as a framework for intervention. Terraces create inhabitable levels; cultivated areas follow shade, soil depth and available water; restoration strengthens the existing wadi. These reference images illustrate the four relationships studied in the report—not completed work at Waseelah. Seasonal runoff, planting density and erosion control remain subject to site-specific hydrological design. Stone retaining terraces and cultivation reference from the report Terraces / report reference Layered cultivated terraces assembled as a landscape precedent Cultivated landscape / report reference Reference landscape showing vegetation along a wadi channel Wadi restoration / report reference 04 / THE BEDOUIN WAY OF LIFE Reading the Land. Bedouin communities moved seasonally along inherited routes connecting wells, wadis, grazing lands and sheltered terrain. A camp was selected where several conditions converged: access to water, sufficient pasture, protection from wind and heat, visibility across the landscape, and connection to established routes. The photograph and settlement study are reproduced as references from the report, rather than a single model for all Bedouin communities. Uncropped historical photograph of a large tent settlement, animals and surrounding landscape Historical settlement / supplied report reference Concept study showing tents in relation to a wadi, vegetation, grazing ground and trees Settlement study / water, grazing, shelter and routes 05 / THE BEDOUIN WAY OF LIFE Living with the Desert. Bedouin life was shaped by seasonal mobility, kinship networks and close knowledge of the desert. Families moved in response to water and grazing conditions and sustained themselves through herding, trade and craft. Collective responsibility supported labour, protection, hospitality and the transmission of practical knowledge between generations. The report brings nomadic life, livelihood, adaptation, culture and community into one account of inhabiting the desert. Full-frame archival family, animals and woven tent photograph from the report Household and shelter / supplied historical reference 06 / PARTITION, ACTIVITY AND HOSPITALITY Tent as a Mobile Domestic System. The tent study shows an organized domestic plan rather than a single undivided shelter. An internal textile partition separated family and working areas from the reception side; bedding, rugs, tools and camel equipment were stored along protected edges. Hearths, water vessels, sleeping areas, coffee preparation and guest seating were arranged according to use and privacy. Rolled textiles and movable furnishings allowed the interior to expand, contract and adapt to family, hospitality and seasonal needs. Uncropped tent photograph retaining its ECPAD watermark Historical tent photograph / ECPAD Complete annotated tent plan with textile partition, hearth, storage, weaving and coffee preparation areas Tent plan / partition, hospitality and everyday activity 07 / CRAFTED FROM THE DESERT The Woven Shelter. The report describes goat hair woven into strips as the principal tent material. Its fibres swell when wet; camel hair is occasionally incorporated for strength, while wool threads stitch and reinforce seams. Wooden stakes, ropes or metal pins anchor the shelter. Cloth, supporting poles, tensioned ropes and adjustable edges form a legible construction system, made through craft and adapted to the ground. The anatomy connects each part to the larger shelter. Full portrait photograph of a woman at a weaving frame Weaving / original colour photograph Complete tent construction anatomy showing woven strips, poles, ropes and all numbered details Tent anatomy / seven complete details 09 / THE REPORT’S MOTIF STUDY Patterns of Identity. The report reads selected woven motifs through four references: mountain, water, shelter and constellation. These are interpretations within the design study, not meanings asserted to apply universally across Bedouin communities. Repetition and assembly become architectural questions: how individual elements form a coherent field, how solid and void create rhythm, and how a shared geometry can hold different spaces together. Threads of Tradition. / architectural view Mountain / water / shelter / constellation 10 / ECOLOGICAL LAYERS OF THE WADI The Wadi: A Layered Landscape. The wadi landscape can be understood as a layered ecological system organized by moisture, shade and soil depth. Date palms and drought-tolerant trees form the upper canopy where water is sufficient; fruit trees and large shrubs occupy the middle layer; grasses, crops and seasonal groundcovers protect the soil below. The report studies these strata as ways to reduce evaporation, stabilize soil and support a cooler, more productive microclimate. Their application at Waseelah depends on verified water availability and locally appropriate planting. Complete ecological strata illustration retaining trees, crops, ground systems and annotations Ecological layers / full annotated reference 13 / ADAPTIVE SHAPING A Roof That Responds. Inspired by the geometry and functionality of the traditional Bedouin tent, the Waseelah roof extends horizontally to provide shade, filter sunlight and encourage ventilation. Its form translates lightweight and modular spatial principles into a permanent architectural structure. The proposal connects indoor spaces with the desert landscape while preserving cultural references; comfort and ventilation are design intentions rather than measured performance claims. A Roof That Responds. / concept drawing Tent section / adaptive roof study 14 / THE TENT AS A SPATIAL SYSTEM Shelter Reinterpreted. The Bedouin tent is more than a roof form; it is both a climatic and social device. Its stretched geometry supports shade, flexible enclosure and collective gathering. These principles are translated into a layered roof system that organizes buildings, courtyards and terraces while remaining integrated with the terrain. Complete study of overlapping Bedouin tent roof forms Tent field / full source composition 15 / THE EXPERIENCE The Landscape Lattice. From above, the project reveals a geometric rhythm within the desert landscape. Terraces, pathways and building forms align with natural contours, merging architecture with the terrain. The geometric lattice guides the eye across the site, bringing built order into dialogue with its rugged topography. A Family of Shelters. / architectural view 16 / THE EXPERIENCE A Moment of Stillness. Amidst the movement of the desert landscape, water creates a quiet pause. Its open layout invites natural light, connecting guests to the landscape while maintaining a sense of intimacy and serenity. Enhanced dining render showing the shared table and triangular roof with views across the landscape Dining / landscape and gathering 23 / INTERIOR EXPERIENCE Sanctuary in Light and Stone. The proposed interior palette is rooted in pale stone, mineral plaster, water, timber, integrated rock and carefully controlled light. Inspired by the wadi’s stratified geology, it emphasizes permanence, tactile depth and a close relationship between architecture and landscape. The garden view extends that relationship into the room, placing the interior in dialogue with shade and planted ground. Garden-facing interior render showing seating, a table and planting beneath the triangular roof Interior / the planted edge 24 / LANDSCAPE Hydrological Strategies. Low terraces, contour walls and planted basins are proposed to slow seasonal runoff and encourage infiltration. Shallow retention areas, swales, gravel beds and small depressions can hold water before it is lost as rapid surface flow. The report’s reference images illustrate terracing, water capture, wadi revitalization and planting gradients. Their application requires hydrological design, safe overflow routes and verified water availability; they are not photographs of completed Waseelah works. Uncropped terraced landscape reference Hydrological terracing / report reference Uncropped basin and planting reference Seasonal water capture / report reference Uncropped channel within a rocky planted landscape Wadi revitalization / report reference Full-frame transition from exposed slope to denser landscape reference Planting gradients / report reference 25 / PRESERVE · REINFORCE · CULTIVATE Landscape as Memory. The landscape strategy begins with preservation rather than replacement. Existing rock formations, drainage paths and established vegetation define the framework of the project. Intervention is concentrated around buildings, paths and gathering spaces, where planting, shade and water-sensitive design reinforce the character already present within the site. Landscape concept sequence connecting preservation, drainage and shade reinforcement, and cultivated courts Preserve / reinforce / cultivate 26 / WORKING WITH THE SLOPE Terracing the Terrain. Low terraces are proposed to transform the steep terrain into a sequence of stable and inhabitable levels. Retaining walls follow the contours, slow surface runoff and create platforms for planting, circulation and architecture. The objective is not to erase the slope, but to make its existing structure legible and occupiable. Grading and erosion-control measures remain subject to coordinated engineering. Landscape sections showing an existing slope, proposed contour terraces and inhabited levels Existing slope / contour terraces / inhabited levels 27 / CLOSING VIEW The Bedouin Retreat. The closing illustration returns to the relationship between land, shelter and hospitality. Awfa Mosque AWFA Mosque in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, brings Najdi spatial traditions into a contemporary civic setting through prayer halls, shaded galleries and planted courts. Designed by ENTROPIC and Aldowayan Architects, AWFA Mosque connects Riyadh's active urban edge with neighbourhood life. Its layered enclosure, gardens and prayer spaces translate a local spatial inheritance into a contemporary journey towards worship. AWFA Mosque is conceived as a place of worship and an everyday civic anchor in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The design draws from Najdi relationships between courtyard, shaded passage and enclosed interior, developing these principles through a rhythmic stone frame rather than a literal reproduction of historic form. A gateway between the Sports Boulevard side of the city and the surrounding neighbourhood leads through arrival, community and spiritual courts. The main prayer hall and community volume share a related order, with planted passages, layered thresholds and screened prayer spaces shaping the visitor's experience. The proposal by ENTROPIC and Aldowayan Architects brings collective life and personal stillness into one coherent architectural setting. AWFA Mosque, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, mosque design, Najdi architecture, contemporary mosque, Sports Boulevard, prayer hall, courtyard, Aldowayan Architects, ENTROPIC AWFA Mosque in Riyadh / updated city-facing render AWFA Mosque / Riyadh, Saudi Arabia 01 / A Civic Anchor. A Place of Stillness A Civic Anchor. A Place of Stillness. AWFA Mosque begins at the meeting of two urban conditions: Riyadh's active metropolitan edge and the quieter life of a neighbourhood. The proposal by ENTROPIC and Aldowayan Architects makes that junction a place of worship, encounter and retreat. From a distance, a rhythmic stone enclosure gives the mosque a clear civic presence. Up close, its apparent solidity opens into galleries, gardens and carefully framed passages. The building is not an isolated monument. It is a sequence of thresholds, connecting the scale of the city to the scale of the person. Front Elevation Latest frontal render of AWFA Mosque showing the minaret, rhythmic enclosure and planted approach AWFA Mosque / the civic edge 19 / Two Volumes. One Shared Journey Two Volumes. One Shared Journey. The plan unfolds between the main prayer hall and a second volume containing community functions and supporting spaces. A soft northward movement passes between them, connecting the building's entrances, courts and planted edges. Rather than place every activity behind one undifferentiated facade, the proposal gives different uses a clear position within a shared order. The prayer hall is oriented towards the qibla, while public movement continues through the wider site. Separate routes and thresholds accommodate different visitors without losing the sense of one coherent place. The plan drawing makes those relationships visible. Main Arcade Complete AWFA plan strategy with general, female and male prayer routes, north arrow and legend Plan strategy / general flow and prayer routes 14 / Turning Towards the Neighbourhood Turning Towards the Neighbourhood. On the residential side, the mosque receives another scale of movement. The arrival plaza and planted perimeter make room for people approaching from nearby streets, with the same rhythmic enclosure giving the building continuity on every edge. This outward relationship matters to the project's civic role. AWFA is designed to be encountered in the course of daily life as well as at designated times of prayer. Its public presence is expressed through routes, shaded thresholds and the legibility of its entrances: a recognisable neighbourhood anchor, connected to the larger city but attentive to the life immediately around it. Latest rear approach render showing the mosque enclosure and arrival plaza facing the neighbourhood Neighbourhood approach / the arrival edge 06 / Architecture Measured in Light Architecture Measured in Light. Repeated ribs turn the enclosure into a changing field of light and shadow. Their rhythm is legible in the mosque's outline, but also in the shade cast across a gallery, the depth of an entrance and the gradual reveal of a prayer space. The report brings three scales of experience together: public space, the sheltered exterior and the interior. Each has its own degree of openness. Light marks their differences without requiring a change of architectural language. The proposal treats daylight as part of the passage towards prayer, not as an ornamental effect added after the plan is complete. Female Prayer Hall Project-authored diagram showing filtered light across the public edge, mosque exterior and prayer interior Light concept / public space, exterior and interior 05 / Moments of Serenity Moments of Serenity. The gardens are discovered in stages rather than presented as one open panorama. Planted edges, recesses and framed passages reveal a tree, a court or a quieter outlook as the visitor moves through the building. This layering is the heart of the report's idea of serenity. The spiritual plaza, community garden and arrival court each offer a different relationship to activity and withdrawal. A shared route holds them together, but their atmospheres remain distinct. The proposal makes room for both encounter and solitude, allowing the experience of the mosque to change with the purpose of the visit. Male Prayer Hall Entrance Project-authored concept diagram showing the spiritual plaza, community garden and arrival plaza Serenity concept / three landscapes along one route 07 / A Landmark With an Inhabited Edge A Landmark With an Inhabited Edge. The minaret establishes a quiet vertical presence within the rhythmic field of the mosque. Its more solid city-facing side and layered openings belong to the same family of parts as the surrounding enclosure. The gateway gives this civic sign a human scale. Recesses and successive frames draw the visitor inward, making the entrance an experience of depth rather than a flat opening in a facade. The design translates a familiar relationship between landmark and threshold into a contemporary composition: a clear point of orientation, followed by a measured transition towards the spaces of worship. Latest portrait render showing the AWFA minaret and layered entrance gateway The minaret and recessed gateway 03 / The Intelligence of Najd The Intelligence of Najd. In Najdi architecture, the relationship between an enclosed exterior and an inhabited interior is a powerful spatial idea. Courtyards, shaded passages, thick edges and controlled openings make a gradual passage from exposure to shelter. At At-Turaif, this architectural tradition is part of the cultural landscape from which the report draws its references. The project does not reproduce an earthen settlement in stone. It studies how privacy, proportion, rhythm and changing enclosure can inform a mosque in contemporary Riyadh. Heritage becomes a way of organising experience: the depth of a threshold, the shelter of a court, and the moment a view opens after a compressed passage. Rear Elevation 04 / Gateway Transition Gateway Transition. The mosque stands between the Sports Boulevard side of the city and its residential surroundings. The report describes this position as a gateway: a place where different speeds, movements and scales can meet. AWFA gives that transition architectural depth. Pedestrian routes pass through a related field of colonnades and courts, with the minaret providing an orienting presence. Arrival is not a single abrupt boundary between street and prayer. It unfolds through shade, changing enclosure and glimpses of the spaces beyond. The route allows the city to remain present while its intensity begins to recede. Central Courtyard and Male Prayer Hall Entrance Central Courtyard and Male Prayer Hall Entrance 09 / The Stair as a Meeting Place The Stair as a Meeting Place. The community stair gives a change in level a social role. Broad steps become an inhabited edge beside the garden, joining movement with the possibility of sitting, waiting and talking. The report develops this space alongside a separate, more private route to the women's prayer area. Different needs are acknowledged through the organisation of the plan rather than hidden in an afterthought. The stair belongs to the wider sequence of courts and galleries, making circulation visible as part of the communal life of the mosque. Latest render showing the broad community stair opening towards the planted courtyard Community stair / movement and gathering 11 / Community Under One Tree Community Under One Tree. The community garden offers a different form of gathering. A substantial tree gives the court a shared centre, with planted edges and sheltered seating making room for conversation before or after prayer. The architecture frames the garden without closing it off from the life around it. Openings reveal adjacent passages and the movement of people between the mosque's different spaces. This is the civic ambition of the project at a close scale: not only a large collective room, but a series of everyday places where neighbours can meet and remain together. Latest render of AWFA community garden showing a large tree, shaded seating and layered architectural edges Community garden / the shared tree 12 / A Threshold Designed With Care A Threshold Designed With Care. The women's entrance is approached through a dedicated sequence of planting, steps and enclosure. Its position gives the route privacy while keeping it connected to the architectural language and landscape of the mosque. The design treats the quality of arrival as a shared concern. A quieter threshold should still have clear orientation, proportion and a sense of welcome. The route rises towards the prayer space through changing views of the court, making access part of the spatial story rather than a secondary door detached from the life of the building. Latest render of the dedicated women's entrance with planted steps and screened architectural edges Women's entrance / a private garden route 13 / A Rhythm That Can Be Walked A Rhythm That Can Be Walked. Along the perimeter, a full-height arcade makes the enclosure a place of movement. Repeated structural elements frame both the route and the view, giving the visitor a changing relationship to the city beyond. The rhythm recalls the spatial order of colonnades and the repeated members of traditional roofs, but it is developed through the mosque's own stone and canopy language. The gallery is neither fully outside nor fully inside. It offers an inhabited edge where shade, passage and orientation become part of the same architectural experience. Latest render of the perimeter arcade showing repeated ribs, deep shade and the route beside AWFA Mosque Perimeter gallery / shade and passage 16 / Entering the Space of Prayer Entering the Space of Prayer. The approach to the prayer hall narrows the field of attention. Successive frames give depth to the entrance, while the canopy's rhythm and the planted edge keep the route connected to the wider building. Arrival is made gradual. The visitor passes from the activity of the court into a more sheltered setting, with light revealing the next threshold. This sequence draws from the report's study of Najdi spatial experience, but develops it through the mosque's contemporary geometry. The entrance prepares the change of atmosphere before the hall is fully revealed. Latest render showing the layered entrance and planted approach to the main prayer hall Prayer entrance / the depth of a threshold 17 / A Hall Within the Urban Frame A Hall Within the Urban Frame. The prayer hall is held within the broader order of the mosque, yet its interior has a distinct sense of focus. The repeated overhead elements continue the exterior rhythm, while their depth shapes the perception of light and scale. The design does not rely on a collection of decorative signs to establish atmosphere. Proportion, material, orientation and the relationship between enclosure and opening do the work. The route through courts and galleries reaches a space in which movement gives way to attention, and the architecture supports a shared direction of prayer. Latest interior approach render showing the mosque prayer hall, repeated roof structure and framed opening Main prayer hall / rhythm and orientation 18 / Privacy Without Disconnection Privacy Without Disconnection. A screened upper prayer space has a visual relationship with the main hall while retaining its own degree of enclosure. Repeated screening elements filter the view and continue the project's broader interest in layered edges. The screen mediates between privacy, shared worship and the perception of light. Through its depth and repetition, the mashrabiya is brought into dialogue with the canopy and colonnade. The report describes stone mashrabiyas on pages 62-63; the selected updated render remains a design visualisation, not a final material specification. The proposal makes this a composed spatial relationship, rather than a claim that every historic screen or prayer arrangement is the same. Latest render of the women's prayer space showing timber screening towards the main hall Women's prayer space / the filtered view 21 / Stone, Shadow and Memory Stone, Shadow and Memory. The material direction brings stone and timber into a restrained architectural language. The report relates pale Riyadh stone, repeated overhead members and layered screens to a local spatial inheritance without reproducing a historic building literally. The richness of the proposal comes from depth and repetition. A rib catches light; an opening reveals a court; a screen changes as the visitor moves. These small variations make a simple geometric order responsive to occupation. The materials shown are part of the design proposal, not a certification of final procurement, environmental performance or construction compliance. 15 / After the City Changes Pace After the City Changes Pace. After dark, the architectural rhythm is read through another balance of enclosure and light. The minaret remains an orienting presence, while the entrances and galleries reveal the depth of the building rather than flattening it into a luminous facade. The night view returns to the civic scale before the presentation moves into the prayer interiors. AWFA is conceived as a mosque that can hold collective activity and personal stillness within one shared frame. Its contemporary character lies in that balance: rooted in a local spatial inheritance, open to the city, and composed around the experience of worship and everyday life. The Flows of Nemu A riverfront masterplan blending ecology, culture, and urban life. Located in Kaunas’ Nemunaičiai Quarter, the project transforms a disused riverfront into an active civic edge. It proposes a network of adaptable green corridors that host cultural events, recreation, and everyday life. By linking river ecology with urban regeneration, the design strengthens community identity and long-term livability. The masterplan is structured around a series of flows—parallel landscape bands that alternate between natural and civic functions. Each band defines a unique spatial rhythm, from floodable meadows and walkways to plazas and event terraces. This layered structure allows the district to coexist with changing water levels, turning ecological processes into public experience. At once infrastructural and poetic, The Flows of Nemunaičiai redefines the relationship between city and river. Local materials, seasonal planting, and hydrological design ensure adaptability and resilience. The project envisions the riverfront as a living organism—absorbing, filtering, and hosting life—while creating a cultural landscape for future generations. National Ethnography Museum A modern homestead museum blending tradition, nature, and innovation. Designed for Rumšiškės, the National Ethnography Museum fuses tradition and modernity. The building is divided into five volumes resembling homesteads, united by a central exhibition hall. By sinking three of its four floors underground, it preserves a human scale and blends into the Lithuanian Open-Air Museum landscape. The architectural vision draws from Lithuanian rural heritage, transforming the archetype of the farmhouse into a contemporary museum complex. Each volume has a distinct role—administration, storage, café-library—while the central hall serves as the heart for exhibitions. Thatched roofs, timber structures, and reclaimed brick reconnect the museum to vernacular materials and traditions. Sustainability defines the project’s logic. Most functions are underground to minimize visual impact and stabilize temperature, reducing energy needs. Reed roofs shield interiors from overheating, while UV-protective glazing safeguards collections. Hills landscaped from excavated soil foster biodiversity and seasonal change, turning nature itself into part of the museum’s exhibit. Lattice Tower A timber tower uniting memory, landscape, and human experience. Situated on the slopes of Polak Hill, the Lattice Tower transforms an area of historical significance into an immersive architectural journey. It reinterprets memory as experience—inviting visitors to explore rather than merely observe. Constructed primarily from timber, it merges material honesty with phenomenological depth, linking nature, heritage, and human aspiration. The design translates intangible values—courage, history, and coexistence—into a physical structure. From afar, the tower appears as a delicate silhouette dissolving into the sky, a wooden “cloud” emerging from the landscape. Its transparency and density shift with the viewer’s movement, harmonizing with the rhythm of trees around it. As visitors ascend, the form grows lighter, evoking both excitement and reflection—a vertical journey through space, memory, and emotion. At its base, the exposed timber structure reveals its logic—simple joinery and visible detailing convey craftsmanship and clarity. The ascent is not only a path upward but a sequence of experiences: platforms for rest, reflection, and storytelling. Each level becomes a fragment of the region’s collective memory, narrating the courage and endurance of its defenders. The tower thus becomes a vertical museum in the open air, inviting exploration, discovery, and remembrance. Svamptornet A timber and steel water tower inspired by the geometry of nature. Located in Hemmesta, the tower reinterprets a utilitarian structure as an architectural and ecological gesture. The conical form ensures structural efficiency and balanced water pressure, while minimizing material use and land impact. The tower’s wooden ribs and steel structure create a lightweight, maintainable, and sustainable design that blends with the forest canopy. Inspired by the chanterelle’s natural shape, Svamptornet embodies the connection between life and water. The conical geometry is not only a structural response but a metaphor for balance—directing weight and flow downward to achieve stability with minimal resources. The hyperboloid façade of straight timber slats creates a distinct silhouette, simplifying construction while expressing the elegance of tension and rotation found in natural systems. An integrated lighting system transforms the tower into a subtle nocturnal landmark. Hidden LED strips along the inner ribs softly illuminate the upper volume for public events and seasonal celebrations, while preserving the surrounding ecology from direct light pollution. By combining form, function, and environmental care, Svamptornet stands as a testament to sustainable infrastructure—an engineered sculpture rooted in the landscape. Playful Blocks – Learning Village Two visions for a sustainable, community-centered school in Meri-Rastila. The design process proposed two strategies for the site: one based on adaptive reuse, and another on complete renewal. Playful Blocks focuses on reimagining the school using existing foundations, turning constraints into a sustainable design advantage. Learning Village envisions a new, energy-efficient complex with optimized daylight, passive ventilation, and fluid urban integration. Together, the two options demonstrate a holistic understanding of educational architecture—from playful, modular form to forward-thinking environmental design. Playful Blocks is inspired by the whimsical forms of children’s toys—an ensemble of distinct yet interconnected learning volumes that foster creativity and curiosity. Built atop existing foundations, it minimizes waste and celebrates circular construction, using timber and white brick to create bright, tactile, and enduring spaces. A central indoor street connects the various halls and classrooms, promoting openness, interaction, and community participation. The architecture invites play and exploration, making learning an experience of movement and discovery. Learning Village instead proposes a new structure built from simple, sustainable materials to achieve long-term efficiency and adaptability. The building’s trapezoidal form expands the city’s masterplan logic while maintaining a human scale. Strategic cuts in the volume introduce natural light and outdoor connections, merging the school with the urban square and adjacent park. Passive design principles, optimized acoustics, and outdoor classrooms define an inclusive, high-performing educational environment that reflects Meri-Rastila’s renewed identity. Nexgen Residential research connecting modular timber construction, material life cycles and habitat-integrated façades. NexGen is ENTROPIC’s residential research into the relationship between timber construction, material life cycles and habitat. The proposal brings modular housing, passive design principles and biohabitat façades into one architectural system, examining sustainability through the design of the dwelling and the landscape it inhabits. Developed as a 2022 concept study, NexGen follows a sequence from environmental questions to architectural vision, building system and physical façade prototype. A repeated timber framework supports a compact residential language, while planting pockets and habitat-oriented modules give the envelope a role beyond enclosure. Individual homes, microclusters and row-house arrangements test the relationship between domestic scale and collective settlement. The research addresses embodied carbon alongside operational energy: responsible timber sourcing, the processing and service life of fired-clay components, climate-responsive daylight and ventilation, and the proposed integration of photovoltaics, a heat pump and greywater recycling. These are design strategies rather than verified performance outcomes. Carbon neutrality, energy savings and ecological gain would require project-specific assessment, engineering development and monitoring. Architecture – Residential Research Prototype 2022 Scalable system Residential Research and Design Initiative Geoffrey Eberle, Magdalena Mróz ENTROPIC NexGen | Sustainable Timber Housing Research | ENTROPIC NexGen by ENTROPIC explores modular timber housing, circular material strategies and habitat-integrated façades through a sustainability-led research proposal. sustainable housing research, modular timber construction, whole-life carbon, embodied carbon, habitat-integrated façade, biohabitat façade, passive design, circular material strategies 01 / Problem Beyond the linear building. How can housing move away from the destructive cycles of extraction, consumption and disposal? NexGen approaches this question through the relationship between embodied carbon, operational energy and habitat. Material production and replacement belong in the same discussion as the energy a home uses. The research therefore considers the dwelling as an assembly within longer material and ecological cycles—not as an isolated object whose environmental responsibility ends at occupation. Linear material cycles — NexGen research diagram, 2022. Linear material cycles — NexGen research diagram, 2022. 02 / Vision A home for more than human life. NexGen imagines housing as part of an inhabited landscape. Timber dwellings, planted ground and habitat-oriented façades are conceived together: architecture that makes room for people without treating other forms of life as an afterthought. NexGen in the urban landscape — architectural visualisation. NexGen in the urban landscape — architectural visualisation. 02 / Vision Living alongside productive landscapes. The proposal asks how domestic life might coexist with agriculture rather than displace it. Clustered homes and elevated access routes concentrate occupation while the landscape remains an active setting for cultivation and everyday life. Housing, food and land are considered within one spatial proposition: a domestic environment whose character is inseparable from the productive ground around it. Housing alongside a productive landscape — architectural visualisation. Housing alongside a productive landscape — architectural visualisation. 02 / Vision A different future for industrial ground. The harbour study places the same residential language within a working industrial landscape. Its contrast is deliberate: a setting associated with extraction and heavy infrastructure becomes the ground for a different architectural possibility. Reuse and transformation extend the project’s environmental question beyond the building component to the urban territory. In application, remediation, flood risk and ground conditions would form part of that design brief. An industrial waterfront reimagined through NexGen housing — architectural visualisation. An industrial waterfront reimagined through NexGen housing — architectural visualisation. 02 / Vision Nature as an everyday encounter. The approach to the home is part of the architecture. A raised path, planted ground and a more intimate scale of dwelling turn the journey through the landscape into a daily experience. Rather than treating greenery as an applied finish, NexGen uses the relationship between route, threshold and habitat to frame its idea of residential wellbeing. The approach through a meadow — architectural visualisation. The approach through a meadow — architectural visualisation. 03 / Solution Five principles, one environmental section. The section brings together the source’s five design principles: punctual foundations, passive energy strategies, bioactive façades, circular material thinking and compact clustered urbanism. Roof daylighting, cross- and stack-ventilation sit alongside a timber frame and insulated envelope. Photovoltaics, an air-to-water heat pump, battery storage and greywater recycling are proposed as coordinated systems. Their sizing and performance remain climate- and site-dependent design questions. Environmental section: daylight, ventilation, timber structure and proposed building services. Environmental section: daylight, ventilation, timber structure and proposed building services. 03 / Solution The dwelling as a repeatable unit. A compact dwelling is the starting point for a larger residential system. The source investigates a hexagonal organising geometry, allowing individual volumes to gather while retaining a recognisable domestic scale. Repetition is used as an architectural discipline: a way to examine how structure, enclosure and orientation might be coordinated without prescribing one fixed settlement pattern. A single dwelling — original modular massing study. A single dwelling — original modular massing study. 03 / Solution From a home to a shared cluster. The microcluster gives the repeated unit a collective dimension. Several dwellings gather around the spaces between them, making proximity and shared ground part of the design rather than residual space. This intermediate scale links the private home to the neighbourhood. It also opens questions of access, privacy and servicing that would be resolved for each application. The microcluster — original modular massing study. The microcluster — original modular massing study. 03 / Solution A system with more than one urban form. The row-house arrangement tests the system against a more continuous urban edge. Alongside the individual, microcluster and multicluster studies, it shows that modular housing need not produce a single repetitive figure. Density is explored through aggregation and the relationship between built volume and open space. The repeated dwelling becomes a flexible urban grammar rather than a predetermined masterplan. A continuous residential edge — original row-house massing study. A continuous residential edge — original row-house massing study. 03 / Solution A legible timber framework. The structural axonometric makes the timber skeleton explicit. Repeated vertical members and connecting elements establish a framework around which the dwelling is organised. This separation of structural logic from façade expression is central to the research. Timber is considered as a renewable, bio-based construction material; its environmental benefit depends on responsible sourcing, material efficiency, processing, transport and the assembly’s service life. Timber structural concept — complete axonometric. Timber structural concept — complete axonometric. 03 / Solution Material efficiency begins with geometry. The structural plan exposes the rhythm behind the architectural form. A repeated frame can provide a disciplined basis for fabrication and coordination, but repetition alone does not prove resource efficiency or disassembly. NexGen’s next technical questions lie in span, loading, connection access and the relationship between structural members and replaceable building layers. These decisions would determine the system’s actual material demand and future recovery. The rhythm of the timber framework — complete structural plan. The rhythm of the timber framework — complete structural plan. 03 / Solution An envelope with depth and purpose. The architectural axonometric gives the frame an inhabited enclosure. Openings, projecting habitat elements and the lifted threshold articulate the dwelling as a layered body rather than a neutral box. The façade is conceived as an interface between interior comfort and exterior life. Weather protection, moisture management, fire performance and maintenance access would need to be developed together with its ecological ambition. The dwelling and its elevated approach — complete architectural axonometric. The dwelling and its elevated approach — complete architectural axonometric. 03 / Solution Compact urbanism at domestic scale. The plan returns the research to the individual dwelling. Its compact figure and external approach belong to the same system as the larger cluster studies. NexGen treats the house, its threshold and the neighbouring landscape as interdependent scales of design. The proposal explores how a repeatable architectural language can support different forms of residential grouping without losing the character of a home. The compact dwelling and external threshold — complete architectural plan. The compact dwelling and external threshold — complete architectural plan. 03 / Solution The façade as a planted threshold. Small, medium and large planting modules give the façade a changing depth. The enlarged planter shown here turns a repeated cladding element into a potential growing space, connecting the material surface with seasonal vegetation. Plant selection, rooting volume, drainage, irrigation and maintenance are essential parts of this proposition. Together, they make the planted envelope an architectural system to be designed and cared for, rather than a decorative layer. Large planter — one of eight proposed biohabitat façade modules. Large planter — one of eight proposed biohabitat façade modules. 03 / Solution Making room for nesting. Recesses within the façade introduce the possibility of nesting alongside domestic occupation. The source develops two bird-oriented modules rather than treating the envelope as a uniform surface. In application, entrance dimensions, exposure, height and cleaning access would need to respond to locally appropriate species and ecological advice. Architectural provision is the starting point; successful occupation would require observation, not assumption. Bird-oriented nesting cavity — large façade module. Bird-oriented nesting cavity — large façade module. 03 / Solution Different species, different conditions. The bat-oriented module broadens the façade beyond planting and conventional nesting cavities. Its inclusion recognises that habitat design cannot be reduced to one generic opening. Light, temperature, exposure and access conditions require species- and site-specific consideration. NexGen uses these differences to explore an envelope with ecological variation, while leaving habitat performance to subsequent specialist design and monitoring. Bat-oriented shelter — façade module from the 2022 research family. Bat-oriented shelter — façade module from the 2022 research family. 03 / Solution A finer grain of inhabitation. The perforated module introduces a smaller scale of potential shelter for solitary bees. It makes biodiversity tangible through the dimensions and texture of a building component. Such provision must be considered with planting, food resources, exposure and management in the surrounding landscape. The façade can contribute to a habitat network; it cannot substitute for the wider ecological conditions on which that network depends. Perforated solitary-bee-oriented façade module. Perforated solitary-bee-oriented façade module. 04 / Impact Circularity is a material question. The basic clay module brings the material strategy into focus. The source explores digital fabrication and firing as routes to differentiated façade elements, alongside a timber structure with a different material life cycle. Fired clay is mineral, not biodegradable. Its processing energy, durability, replaceability and potential reuse therefore need to be assessed explicitly. Likewise, timber’s biogenic carbon must be considered across sourcing, use and end of life—not presented as automatic carbon neutrality. The basic clay façade module — material, fabrication and service-life research. The basic clay façade module — material, fabrication and service-life research. 04 / Impact A living surface, not a performance label. The long-wall study assembles planting and habitat modules into an architectural field. Its environmental ambition lies in the coordination of many small provisions: growing spaces, cavities and a textured surface connected to the landscape. The effects on temperature, air quality, acoustics and biodiversity would depend on climate, coverage, species and maintenance. NexGen presents a research direction here, not measured reductions or a certified environmental outcome. The biohabitat façade assembled as a continuous planted wall — research visualisation. The biohabitat façade assembled as a continuous planted wall — research visualisation. 04 / Impact From architectural idea to physical enquiry. The early façade prototype brings the research back to a tangible assembly. Planting pockets, perforations and a nesting opening are explored within one component family, giving the proposal a physical scale beyond the render. This is a step towards testing the relationship between making, maintenance and habitat. NexGen’s contribution is the integration of these questions within a residential architecture; whole-life carbon, operational energy and ecological performance remain matters for documented assessment. The Nature Gate Library and kindergarten joined by a forest gateway in Józefów. “The Nature Gate” is a mixed-use proposal for a kindergarten and library in Józefów, on the outskirts of Warsaw. The building is set in a small pine forest, carefully designed to preserve the delicate local ecology. The project joins two program-specific volumes with a connective gateway that doubles as a rooftop playground. The project is based on the idea of compact, rational volumes optimized for their distinct programs: a strip typology with south-facing classrooms for the kindergarten, and a deeper, storage-efficient layout for the library. These are joined by an “umbilical cord” that serves as both gateway and shared space, housing a gymnasium and café while creating unique spatial qualities through its inclined interior. Rather than occupying ground-level space for play, the kindergarten’s entire roof is transformed into a recreational landscape. This gesture both preserves the existing forest and creates one of the most engaging play environments in the city, turning ecological respect into a defining quality of the project. Wood construction underlines the design’s ambition, providing acoustic performance, cost efficiency, and a warm, sustainable atmosphere. Fjorden A mixed-use waterfront district connecting Bergen, its industrial heritage and the fjord. Fjorden proposes a new mixed-use neighbourhood for Laksevåg in Bergen, Norway. Housing, workplaces and public spaces are connected by a waterfront promenade and a bridge conceived as both a route and a place to meet. The proposal brings new life to a disconnected post-industrial shoreline. Existing halls are retained for flexible workplaces, a gallery or a food hall, while new housing and public amenities extend the waterfront into everyday neighbourhood life. Garden islands and a reopened stream connect the harbour to the surrounding hills. Terraced buildings, shared roofs and planted courtyards explore daylight, views and community at different scales. Timber construction, potential material reuse and blue-green public spaces are design ambitions; the presentation does not establish a verified whole-life carbon balance or completed flood-protection works. The Container Tower A modular landmark and public exhibition tower reinterpreting the shipping container on Terneuzen’s waterfront. The Container Tower proposes a new civic landmark for Terneuzen in the Netherlands. ENTROPIC reinterprets the shipping container as a sequence of elevated public rooms, framing the Westerschelde, the harbour and the city through an ascending spiral. A familiar object of maritime trade becomes the starting point for architecture, exhibition and public art. Rotating container-shaped rooms offer different views, while outward shifts create places to gather and tell the history of the port. Together they form an open-air museum as well as a viewing tower. The source develops a square steel circulation core, projecting platforms, lightweight secondary framing and perforated corrugated metal. Repetition and a clear hierarchy of parts support a resource-conscious approach to a small public landmark. Adaptive reuse of containers and reclaimed steel are relevant opportunities for further development; the supplied proposal does not establish a reclaimed-container specification, verified embodied-carbon savings or a cost plan. Warm metallic colours, filtered light and changing views turn the ascent into an interactive encounter with the waterfront. This is a design proposal, not a claim of completed construction or verified engineering performance. Forest Restaurant A timber restaurant and sculptural observation tower designed as a quiet encounter with the forest. Forest Restaurant in Frombork, Poland, brings a timber dining pavilion and observation tower into dialogue with the surrounding woodland. ENTROPIC and studio4space explore how glulam construction, restrained ground-level intervention and a sculptural lookout can make the landscape the centre of the experience. The proposal combines a sheltered restaurant with an elevated outlook, connecting the intimacy of dining among trees with a wider view above the canopy. Glulam members and steel connections establish a clear structural language, while terraces and openings keep the forest present in the visitor experience. Low-impact construction is a design ambition, not an assertion of measured ecological performance. A restrained footprint, repeated members and a legible assembly provide a basis for studying material efficiency, installation and site disturbance. Detailed foundations, tree protection, timber sourcing, durability and maintenance would need project-specific assessment. Timber can retain biogenic carbon during its service life, but that storage alone does not establish a carbon-negative building. Such a claim requires a whole-life assessment accounting for sourcing, manufacture, transport, steel and foundations, maintenance and end of life. The proposal is presented as a resource-conscious timber design, without inventing carbon savings or an achieved carbon-negative balance. The tower also explores the economy of means associated with public art: a recognisable structural idea that creates orientation, a shared outlook and a memorable encounter with place. This is a design intention, not a claim of a verified construction budget or a separately commissioned public-art programme. Forest Restaurant brings dining and a timber lookout into one landscape experience. The restaurant offers a sheltered place among the trees; the tower opens a different perspective above them. At its crown, a generous viewing platform makes the forest itself the main event. The architecture is conceived as a framework for gathering, looking and slowing down, rather than an object competing with its setting. Aerial view of the timber observation platform surrounded by forest The crown / a shared outlook over the forest The project Forest Restaurant redefines dining as an encounter with the landscape. Combining local craftsmanship with sustainable timber engineering, the design creates an atmosphere of calm and sensory immersion. The watchtower complements the dining space—extending the experience vertically, connecting earth and sky, intimacy and vastness. The project unfolds as two interrelated structures: a ground-level restaurant and a vertical lookout. The restaurant’s glulam and steel structure is embedded lightly into the forest floor, minimizing environmental disturbance while framing views of the surrounding trees and sea. Inside, soft light filters through timber ribs, shaping a tranquil dining atmosphere that celebrates local materials and craftsmanship. Beside it, the 25-meter observation tower offers a contemplative ascent through the canopy. Inspired by the form of a flower calyx, the tower’s diagrid glulam frame tapers upward to a viewing platform above the treetops. Together, the two elements create a dialogue between shelter and openness—between dining grounded in nature and a quiet moment elevated above it. The project The restaurant combines glulam and steel in a low-rise frame that keeps the landscape present. Repeated timber members give structure and atmosphere a shared language, while the terrace and large openings extend the dining experience outdoors. Low-impact construction is the design aim: a restrained footprint and an economy of parts, with foundations, installation and tree protection requiring site-specific development. Forest Restaurant Forest Restaurant proposal at dusk, with timber-framed dining rooms, an outdoor terrace and the lookout behind Restaurant and terrace / a timber landscape setting The glulam diagrid turns the climb into an encounter with structure, light and trees. It pursues the economy of means of a public-art installation: one clear structural idea, many experiences. Carbon-negative timber construction remains an ambition to test through whole-life assessment, not a verified result. The Coastal Path A flood-resilient landscape reconnecting Vejle’s city, nature, and fjord. In response to rising sea levels, The Coastal Path establishes a new protective landscape for Vejle, Denmark. The 50,000 m² intervention combines storm flood defense with ecological restoration and urban connectivity. Meandering paths and basins elevate the coastline while creating new public spaces that celebrate water, movement, and nature. The Coastal Path proposes a hybrid landscape that merges flood protection with recreation and ecology. By adding new land to the harbor edge, a system of raised basins and interwoven paths secures the coastline up to 2100. The design restores the missing link between Vejle’s urban core and the natural beauty of its fjord and forest, shielding users from road and rail while offering uninterrupted access to nature. The project becomes a living interface between land and water. Visitors experience the changing tide levels through sculpted topography, immersive paths, and restored marine habitats. Stone reefs and mussel banks enhance water quality, while eelgrass meadows regenerate biodiversity and capture carbon. The result is an adaptive, multi-layered landscape that protects the city and enriches life above and below the surface. Floating Gardens Floating storm barriers transforming Vejle’s harbor into public gardens. Situated in Vejle, Denmark, The Floating Gardens combines storm surge protection with ecological and social renewal. The modular floating system secures the city to a 3-meter elevation, ensuring adaptability to future sea-level rise. At the same time, it transforms the harbor into a chain of floating parks, uniting water, nature, and people. The Floating Gardens transforms the conventional idea of flood infrastructure into a poetic and adaptive landscape. Instead of static seawalls, a series of floating islands protect Vejle while bringing the city closer to its water. Each island is designed as a self-contained micro-ecosystem, hosting habitats for flora, birds, and marine life while integrating social spaces such as playgrounds, cafés, and quiet gardens. Together, they form a new public realm that evolves with the tides—resilient yet constantly alive. The project reclaims Vejle’s industrial harbor as an ecological and civic destination. The floating modules can be reconfigured or relocated as environmental and urban needs change, turning flexibility into a form of resilience. This modular strategy invites phased public and private investment, enabling incremental growth and community ownership. Through its hybrid identity—as protection, park, and social infrastructure—The Floating Gardens becomes a blueprint for cities learning to live gracefully with water. Aarhus Park A landscape vision linking Kongelunden’s woodland, lakes, sport and public life through a shared loop. Kongens Spind is ENTROPIC and AIM’s 2020 vision for Kongelunden in Aarhus. A shared landscape loop connects existing places and proposed activities, opening the park to walking, cycling, nature and everyday encounter. The proposal approaches Kongelunden as one connected landscape with many identities. The loop links sports facilities, woodland, lakes and cultural destinations, while reworked routes favour pedestrians and cyclists and place replacement parking near entrances. Six linked strategies address pedestrian priority, activation, local identity, biodiversity, community and navigation. The source board combines active places with quiet gardens, water experiences and woodland paths. Wild gardens and beekeeping around the racecourse are proposed ecological interventions, not measured biodiversity outcomes. The vision responds to the competition’s ambitions for a shared destination, movement and community, sport and cultural events, quiet reflection, and wider public access. It is a competition-stage landscape proposal, not a claim that the illustrated interventions were constructed. The Spiral School A continuous timber kindergarten designed as a playful learning spiral. Located in Michałowice, Poland, The Spiral School was designed to challenge conventional multi-storey layouts. The project transforms the constraints of the site into opportunity: a double-wrapped circle that forms a gentle, continuous slope. Children can explore the entire building—inside and out—without ever encountering a stair. The design begins with the question: how can we create freedom of movement in a restricted footprint? By coiling a linear kindergarten typology into a spiral, the architects turned limitation into invention. The result is a ramped plan where classrooms, courtyards, and gardens are connected through playful continuity. From a child’s perspective, it feels like a single flowing floor—a world of motion, discovery, and interaction. Constructed entirely from timber, the school is both sustainable and sensory. Wood provides warmth, tactile familiarity, and acoustic comfort, while demonstrating the potential of renewable materials in public architecture. More than a kindergarten, The Spiral School becomes a manifesto for ecological learning—raising generations to see wood not as an alternative, but as a natural standard for the future. Fokus Pavillion A low-cost timber pavilion for Denmark’s largest video arts festival. Commissioned for the FOKUS Video Arts Festival, the pavilion transforms a small public square into an urban cinema and gathering point. Its lightweight modular system was conceived for quick assembly, reuse, and affordability. The structure aligns with the festival’s spirit of openness—connecting art, architecture, and community through shared experience. The concept evolved from a simple rectangular box large enough to host ten video-art posters, symbolizing the festival’s “10 Posters = 10 Films” theme. Through a sequence of design moves—cut, shift, and push—the form splits, rotates, and lowers to create two open entrances and dynamic interior volumes. The pavilion’s geometry invites visitors to pass through, discover, and linger among glowing video works that animate the public realm. Constructed with readily available materials—timber posts, pallets, rope, and painted MDF panels—the design prioritizes economy, simplicity, and reuse. Prefabrication enables rapid on-site construction and easy disassembly after the event. Its bright colors and recognizable shape strengthen the visual identity of FOKUS, turning a temporary installation into a civic landmark of creativity and participation. Superframe Superframe / Superblock: one adaptable mixed-use housing and urban framework. Superframe brings the architectural housing system and its Superblock urban framework into one mixed-use proposal. Developed for the 2017 Russian housing competition, the study connects residential buildings, active commercial ground floors, shared facilities and a walkable public realm. The question is not simply how to repeat a building, but how a repeatable system can make a diverse neighbourhood. Material resources and individual identity inform the responsive urban block, three housing typologies and adaptable façades. These scales form one project: an urban structure capable of accommodating difference, and an architectural framework that gives that difference a precise construction logic. The proposal reads residents’ alterations to uniform housing—changed windows, painted façades and additions to balconies—as a demand for self-identification. Rather than treating individuality as an exception to the system, Superframe makes it a starting condition. A repeatable structural frame can contain different domestic arrangements and different expressions of the home. The module diagram makes the distinction tangible: the supporting order remains coherent while the inhabitable parts can change. Standardisation is therefore redirected from visual sameness towards compatibility. A common framework becomes the means through which many households can participate in the character of a building and, collectively, its streetscape. The base proposal allows different combinations of the three building typologies. The purpose is to demonstrate how one system can respond to pre-existing urban conditions, local environments and different ambitions for a neighbourhood. The diagram gathers circulation, roof occupation, shared spaces and ground-floor programmes into a variable block. This is the transition from a single composition to a repeatable method. The common grid coordinates change without requiring every city, site or community to inherit the same form. The vision begins with the relationship between housing demand, material resources and production. Its regional mapping considers forests, transport infrastructure, cities and timber-processing facilities as parts of a connected construction landscape. Superframe proposes a transition towards timber-based prefabrication, with a hybrid concrete-and-timber approach where the building system requires it. The architectural ambition is inseparable from the organisation of production: repeated components can support a coordinated housing programme without prescribing one identical building. The map records the research context of the original study, not a current resource assessment or a measured environmental outcome. Original regional resource diagram supporting the Superframe timber housing study Regional resource study · original booklet research 26 / III. ADAPT Climate as a Design Variable. The adaptable system is connected with environmental design. Building orientation and variations in height are intended to improve access to sunlight and reduce self-shading of courtyards. Façade choices can respond to colder conditions through the balance of window and wall, or to exposure through material selection. The proposal also considers shared building-service systems rather than treating heating, ventilation and cooling only as individual apartment decisions. These are coordinated design intentions, not verified energy savings. The diagram returns the building to the wider material-and-energy system with which the presentation began. The proposal uses prefabricated façade modules measuring 3.2 × 3.2 metres, set within a clad structural frame and using a unified connection system. Residents or developers can select among the modules according to architectural expression, budget and intended performance. The common interface is what allows diversity to remain coherent. Rather than making every unit look the same, the catalogue places different choices within one legible mass. The diagram explains the assembly logic; the following catalogues show how that logic can support many compositions at the scale of a street. Central access, gallery access and the tower offer three ways to organise the same housing framework. Each establishes a different relationship between circulation, apartment frontage and urban form. Their combination allows the neighbourhood to change height, density and spatial character without abandoning a common architectural language. Each domestic plan belongs to an access system; each access system belongs to a street and courtyard. The tower, perimeter buildings, courtyards, roof terraces and public spaces are not separate proposals; they are different expressions of one mixed-use framework. Superframe is its architectural system, and Superblock its urban composition. The project’s central proposition is shared individuality: compatibility without enforced sameness. From the façade panel to the apartment, from the shared room to the street, a common order supports variation. The result is a housing vision in which construction logic, domestic choice and civic life can be considered together. DESIGN A Public Square with an Everyday Purpose. The intermediate space between buildings becomes a public square, surrounded by commercial uses that give it an active edge. The transparent ground-floor plinth works collectively with the street: shopfronts, entrances and shared facilities make the perimeter more than a residential boundary. The proposal understands mixed use through proximity. Homes overlook public life without surrendering their privacy; everyday services can sit within walking distance; and the square provides a place to meet beyond the domestic interior. The accompanying render translates the programme diagram into a recognisable urban room. DESIGN Courtyards: A Quieter Interior to the City. Perimeter blocks create semi-private courtyards primarily for their residents. Where the public square is open to the city, the courtyard offers a more sheltered setting for play, planting and everyday encounters. This distinction allows community and privacy to coexist instead of forcing one spatial model onto every activity. The landscape render shows this domestic scale within the larger framework. The school occupies a position between courtyard calm and urban accessibility, linking a protected outdoor environment with the wider neighbourhood. The block becomes a sequence of different degrees of belonging, not a simple division between public and private. DESIGN A Second Landscape Above. Roof terraces extend outdoor life beyond the ground plane. Reserved for building users, they offer additional places for shared activity, cultivation and views across the neighbourhood. Their varying levels also allow the silhouette to respond to the scale of different streets and courtyards. Shared rooms are distributed through the buildings rather than confined to a single amenity floor. The diagrams distinguish roof occupation from internal communal provision, making both part of the housing structure. Superframe adds collective opportunities without asking the private dwelling to perform every social function. DESIGN Central Access: A Compact Domestic Order. The central-access model groups apartments around a shared internal core. Its floor plan tests how different unit sizes can occupy the same structural grid, while the section relates the residential floors to the ground-floor plinth and changes in building height. The drawings are presented as complete architectural studies, with their orientation and proportions intact. Read together, plan and section explain the relation between circulation, private rooms and the external envelope. The model gives the block a repeatable interior order while leaving room for variation in household size and the profile of the building. Complete section through central-access residential building Central-access building section Complete typical floor plan showing apartments around the internal access core Central-access typical floor 12 / II. DESIGN Gallery Access: Circulation as an Edge. The gallery-access model changes the relationship between movement and the dwelling. Circulation is organised along an edge rather than around a compact internal core, producing a different interface between shared access and the apartment frontage. The section and typical floor plan show how this arrangement remains part of the same modular family. The study is not a catalogue of unrelated buildings; it is a set of access strategies that can be combined within one neighbourhood. Choosing among them becomes an architectural response to plot geometry, orientation and the desired character of the residential edge. Complete section of the gallery-access housing model Gallery-access section Typical floor plan of gallery-access housing and residential units Gallery-access typical floor 13 / II. DESIGN Tower: Concentration without Isolation. The tower introduces a more concentrated vertical form into the perimeter-block system. Its smaller footprint and repeated floor organisation allow height to become one of the variables within the neighbourhood, rather than a separate architectural object. The floor plan and section explain that relationship through the building itself: apartments gather around the access core, while the lower levels connect back to the urban ground. The tower belongs to the same family as the lower buildings. Its role is to vary the composition and accommodate a different density within a connected public realm. Complete section through the Superframe residential tower Tower section Typical residential tower floor plan around a central circulation core Tower typical floor 15 / II. DESIGN Adjustable Units, Recognisable Rooms. Apartment layouts follow a predefined modular grid. The source study ranges from compact studios to larger multi-room dwellings, including duplex arrangements. Units can combine horizontally, allowing the same underlying order to accommodate different household needs. The drawings show this adaptability through rooms, circulation and storage rather than through abstract flexibility alone. Each plan is preserved in full so its domestic logic can be read. A repeatable system is valuable only when it supports a useful home: clear relationships between living spaces, private rooms and the entrance remain central to the proposal. DESIGN Shared Activities, Not Just Shared Circulation. The proposal returns to the Kommunalka theme through spaces for collective activity. Superframe separates the privacy of the individual dwelling from opportunities to work, grow, gather and play together. These spaces extend the domestic programme without making every apartment carry the same amenities. The four linked axonometric drawings give this idea a spatial form. Their variations retain a common enclosure and access logic, but change the activity within it. The architectural framework makes room for different communal uses over time, while the programme gives shared space a purpose beyond movement between private doors. Four axonometric studies of Superframe communal activity spaces Shared-activity modules 20 / II. DESIGN Housing Opens onto the Street. The pedestrian street view reconnects the apartment and communal programmes with the neighbourhood. Residential floors sit above an active lower edge, while varying façades and building heights give the route a sequence of addresses rather than a continuous anonymous wall. The relationship is reciprocal. The street supports everyday movement and exchange; the housing provides overlooking and a more particular rhythm to its edges. The project can be read simultaneously as domestic architecture and as an urban framework. Pedestrian street visualisation showing Superframe mixed-use ground floors and residential façades Pedestrian street and residential edge 21 / III. ADAPT Adapt: A Framework, Not a Fixed Form. Axonometric synthesis of adaptable urban-block programmes and access within Superframe Variable urban-block composition 22 / III. ADAPT Construction: Repeat the Interface, Not the Outcome. The detail studies compare concrete and timber models within the wider housing framework. They bring the presentation down to the building envelope: floor edges, wall assemblies and façade interfaces have to coordinate if variation is to remain compatible with a repeatable construction approach. These are original design-study sections, not as-built documentation. Their importance is the link they establish between architectural choice and technical order. The project’s flexibility depends on the parts meeting coherently, rather than on a promise that any façade or plan can be substituted without consequence. Complete original detail section of the Superframe concrete model Concrete-model envelope section Complete original detail section of the Superframe timber model Timber-model envelope section 24 / III. ADAPT A Catalogue of Timber Expressions. The timber catalogue translates the common façade module into a range of treatments, openings and depths. Some examples are more enclosed; others give the aperture a larger presence or introduce planting and recessed edges. The differences sit within a repeated outer dimension. The proposal’s individuality is therefore visible but not arbitrary. A shared construction framework gives the elevation continuity, while the catalogue allows the domestic edge to register different choices. The complete artwork is shown without cropping so the range can be read as a system, not as isolated decorative fragments. Tower with a Twist Spiral birdwatching tower shaped by motion in Latvia’s Pape Park. The Bird Watching Tower was designed for Pape Nature Park, located on Latvia’s western coast. The site is defined by constant movement—migrating birds, wild horses, and bison herds. The tower offers visitors a place to ascend, pause, and observe these natural cycles in harmony with the surrounding landscape. The tower translates the essence of movement into architecture. Its spiral circulation merges walking and pausing into a single experience, echoing the rhythm of migration and natural cycles. Its form evokes the protectiveness of a nest and the elegance of reeds swaying in coastal winds, while its materiality references vernacular Latvian methods. Constructed as a self-balancing steel structure, the tower relies on prefabricated, repetitive elements for cost efficiency and minimal environmental disturbance. Local materials reduce impact, while the lightweight assembly ensures that heavy machinery is not required on-site. As a result, the tower stands as both landmark and extension of the natural park, blending seamlessly into its surroundings.
